Da Vinci Connect TK-8 Students Participate in Two Exciting Events Hosted by NASA and STEMconnector

Da Vinci Connect TK-8 students recently had the opportunity to hear from two extraordinary female NASA engineers making an impact in space. The virtual events, hosted in collaboration with NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and STEMconnector, were designed to inform students of future STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers by connecting them to STEM professionals, real-world challenges, and project-based learning.

During the first of these two incredible events, known as NASA’s Day of Design: Shooting Stars, DV Connect students met with Tessa Rundle, a space suit life support engineer at NASA. Ms. Rundle spent just under an hour with the students sharing her background, how she came to work for NASA, and explaining what exactly a space suit life support engineer does, and how her work impacts the safety of NASA’s astronauts.

The second event connected DV Connect students with Dr. Vemitra White, a NASA STEM Education Specialist. Dr. White is also an Assistant Professor for the LBJ Institute for STEM Education and Research at Texas State University. Dr. White spent an hour discussing her background and engaging students in an exciting star finder activity. She helped students connect how the stars have been an important vehicle for not only exploration, but also social justice. Dr. White shared with students how Harriet Tubman used her own understanding of the stars to help 70 people escape slavery.

Both Dr. White and Tessa Rundle made a significant impact on the DV Connect students during these events. Not only were these events engaging and exciting, these two incredible women also instilled in the students an understanding that they too are capable of working for NASA or doing exciting work in the STEM field. It is safe to say that the STEM field will be forever changed because of the generous gift of time STEMconnector and these two scientists gave to young students who see and believe in endless possibilities.

We wish to extend a huge thanks to Dr. Jo Webber, Da Vinci Trustee and the CEO of STEMconnector, a research company whose mission is to develop a diverse STEM-ready workforce, for organizing these fantastic events.

Reminder: Pickup Location at Back of Campus!

Hi Connect Families,

We have had a fantastic first day back on campus with our normal hybrid schedule! We will share more about our week soon.

For now, please note the important reminder that afternoon pick up takes place in the back parking lot, just like pick up for our afternoon activities the last few weeks. Checkout the blue route in the map below for more details. You can also park–please use the front lot and walk back to the field along the grey wall.

For any middle school students who would like to walk home/leave campus without being released to an adult, please e-mail connect@davincischools.org to grant that permission.

Thank You!

Return to Campus–LA County Travel Quarantine Update

Hi Connect K8 Families,

Please read the below statement from Emily Green regarding LA County’s updated information regarding travel:

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health orders state that Los Angeles County residents should continue to avoid all non-essential travel. As such, we are asking all families and staff members to adhere to the mandate. If you do travel out-of-state, please report your travel to your school principal to determine return to campus date.  We will require any students or staff who travel outside of the state to follow quarantine guidelines prior to returning to a school site in person.

Updated travel quarantine guidance:

Travelers who are fully vaccinated  will not be required to test or quarantine upon their arrival in Los Angeles County if they do not have any symptoms of illness.

Travelers who are not fully vaccinated must quarantine for seven full days after travel if they receive a negative COVID-19 test result taken three to five days after their arrival. If a traveler does not get tested after they arrive in Los Angeles County, they must quarantine for a full 10 days.

All travelers, regardless of their vaccination status, must self-monitor for symptoms for 14 days after their arrival, and should get tested and isolate if they develop symptoms.

Thank you for adhering to these guidelines and helping us all keep each other safe as we return to campus next week.

Speaking at the Virtual Town Hall on March 2nd will be Dr. Matthew Wunder, CEO/Superintendent; Dr. Jennifer Hawn, Chief Operating Officer; Dr. Emily Green, School Nurse; and Vicente Bravo, Chief Administrative Officer.

We will provide an update on our COVID-19 safety plan, discuss timelines, solicit feedback from families, and answer as many questions as we can. March 3.

(Please note: The Town Hall can only accommodate 1,000 participants. If for some reason you are not able to get onto the call, you will have access to the recording, Padlet and survey to provide feedback. Thanks for your understanding.)

An Evening in Celebration of Black Excellence–TONIGHT!

FAN’s Kindness Movement Presents: A Celebration of Black Excellence!
Happening: TONIGHT, Friday 2/26 @ 6:00pm-7:00pm
Greetings DV Connect! In honor of Black History Month, we will be having an exciting evening of education and celebration of Black Excellence for the whole family. We are inviting families to share and to hear about our fellow DV Connect community member’s favorite authors, poets, artists, inventors, or persons representing excellence in Black American Culture.
We are so very thankful to have such a richly diverse and gifted community, and this is an opportunity for our families to share in the celebration of Black History Month.
In honor of so many outstanding achievements, we have also created a pre-event scavenger hunt for students to find any historical or contemporary inventions made by black inventors found in their homes (such as the ice cream scooper, the alarm clock and the lawnmower)! 🍨
Dare to Share your Scavenger Hunt and experiences in Black Excellence on our Connect Community Flipgrid:
We will also be highlighting our very own DV Connect Vice Principal, Tami Christopher! Three of our DV Connect students, representing 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade, interviewed her, and you won’t want to miss the questions they asked her!
Please join us for one hour of singing, celebration and learning in this Zoom Room beginning at 6:00 pm tonight:
